The Mangum Smoke Show
I have an '05 Magnum R/T. Over 150,000 miles. Over the summer I starting having fuel level issues. It would read 1/4 tank still left and all of a sudden the gauge would start climbing to just under 1/2 and then run out of gas. No low fuel light ever came on. I ran out of fuel twice so far. First time no biggie. Throw in a gallon fire it up and go fill up. I though, the float must be bad. Second time I was under 1/4 and I thought it must of been a fluke the first time. Nope... so now on to my major problem.
I ran a little Seafoam during the last fill up and I thought I was good. Unrelated , I week later my MAP sensor took a dump (replaced it) and I did an oil change and air filter. The air filter had a ton of oil in it right by the breather tube. Anyway I had to drive into Chicago 45min ride the next morning and I was low on fuel but had a gallon jug of gas in the back. I wanted to see if the float issue was better so I head off to the city. I'm 40mins into my trip, car is running great ant I get stuck at a train crossing on the south side.. so I was able to pull to the right and turn the car off to wait for the train to pass. (About 5/7mins). I tried to start the car but it just cranked. I though hmmm. I ran out of gas just as I turned it off. The gauge was still over 1/4 so I guess it's still not working. I put in my gallon and tried to start it again. Nothing.. after an hour or so it finally started and it sounded terrible. Plastic clicking and clanking. Like sticking something in the fan. I shut it off for another half hour or so. It then fired up but smoke was non stop pouring out of the exhaust and wouldn't idle. I thought, great.. there goes a motor or head gasket. I got the car to my destination and left it for a week. I went back and see that I have a random misfire & a cylinder 6 misfire code. No water in the oil or oil in the water so I though that was promising. I did the combustion gas/cooling system test and it looked good. The test fluid stayed blue. The car is still smoking like a pig. Can all this just be from a bad fuel injector? Before I blow big money on 16 plugs, all new injectors, coils and a fuel pump.. i really want to make sure there's nothing else it could be..

I would run a compression test and see how that turns out before I started just buying parts to see if that would fix it. That way you'll know for sure if you have a valve or piston issue.

Well... Thanks guys.. I'll have to drag it home and check it out. If the piston is shot, off to the junkyard it goes..
