To wash or not to wash (under the hood)--that is the question

The motor compartment of my '05 R/T has become quite grungy.
I've always kept the underhood of all my cars tidy, but I'm more than a little leary of hosing-down the motor compartment of this one.
Anyone have any experience (good or bad) with this ?
Any suggestions or recommendations welcome.

I've used some Simple Green in a spray bottle & nylon brush on my Challenger. Just be sure to cover the electronics up, don't want to get water in the fuse panel.
